Jelessia Mercedes: [ Late 20s] [Seeking actress of Latin or Asian decent] Curvy. Strikingly beautiful woman. She is a triple threat: singer, dancer, and actress. She knows that she is breath taking and uses it to her advantage. A little rough around the edges because she had to grow up fast, in order to survive. Although she comes across as “urban”, she is extremely sophisticated and can easily tell the difference between silk and polyester from a distance. Moni’s graduate school classmate and best female friend.
What is Comedy? Seriously, what is it? Growing up watching Looney Tunes, Eddie Murphy, Whoppi, Jack Tripper, Sandford & Son, and Red Skeleton, all I knew was that they all made me laugh. They all had a twinkle in their eyes and a wink to the audience. As I got older and lived a little , I realized that the "twinkle" that charmed me so much was actually a tear. Tragedy + timing= comedy. You have to keep laughing in order to keep from crying; yet with out sadness you can't enjoy the good times. While trying to figure out this weird period of life called adultolences the character of "Moni Mitchell" was created. I kept thinking how can I speak truth without sounding didactic? By seasoning situations with humor it makes discussions palatable.
Moni's mishaps and misadventure are humorus to us because we've all been there: being dumped, fired, having a dream deferred. But the differnce with Moni is that she turns the delimma on its head to both empower others as well as herself. If she's really going to fail, she's going to fail in such a way that no one else can top her. "GO MO' or GO HOME" is her motto. And for the last three years I couldn't stop writting about this new character. The world through her big brown cartoon like eyes. Couldn't stop creating the characters who are her back bone or her enemies.
The thing that lights you up inside, whispers to you at night, the thing compels you-that's purpose. Working on Moni for the last three years I have discovered my vocation.
